About Autism Together
Step Into Work plus is part of the larger Autism Together charity (formerly Wirral Autistic Society) which works with people with autism across Wirral, Merseyside and Cheshire providing day, respite, residential and children’s services. The charity was established in1968 by a group of parents who recognised the need for local services for children and adults with autism.
Step Into Work plus opened in 2012 funded by a Big Lottery grant and has already delivered this autism specific programme to almost 150 adults on the autistic spectrum who are looking for work, or work experience, but do not qualify for any additional support to achieve this. The programme aims to teach social and practical skills which are vital to gaining and retaining employment. This includes workplace conduct and rules, basic skills, teamworking, life skills, a unique business project followed by a fully supported work placement where these skills can be utilised.
To date, approximately 33% of students are in permanent employment following their work placement, or due to the valuable experience gained during their placement. Another 25% have gone onto further education or training, have continued successfully in voluntary roles, or taken up other services available to people with autism.
Our experienced and qualified staff have strategies and modules already in place to support and develop adults with autism to enter the world of employment education or training.
