Tom was initially reluctant when he was referred to the Working Futures programme, offered by Tomorrow’s People Trust, by his Jobcentre Plus advisor – and now he thinks it’s the best thing he’s ever done!
Anne-Marie Hunter, a Coordinator at Tomorrow’s People Trust commented “When Tom joined us, he faced many barriers into progressing into employment.
Leaving School with no qualifications knocked his confidence and self-esteem when applying for work and because Tom had never worked he felt that he had nothing to offer an employer.
He was also concerned that he did not have a bank account. Lacking direction, he felt uncertain about his future and was unable to see himself ever moving forward from his current situation.”
Through Working Futures Tom was supported to create a CV, covering letter and complete application forms. He also completed a Safeguarding and Health and Safety course, opened a bank account and successfully completed a work placement with Marks and Spencer.
He was then offered a paid position within the store as a Retail Assistant because of his placement.
Tom said “I didn’t believe I would ever get a job with no qualifications or experience. Looking back, coming onto the Tomorrow’s People Working Futures Programme was the best thing I could have ever done”.
